Harold Jackson’s “Birth Pangs of Democracy,” in THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER correctly captures the difficulties Ethiopians face in building a democratic culture in their country. The democratic process is painful and yet inevitable. It is clear that the ruling and opposition parties, in spite of some setbacks, are determined to continue to engage in a peaceful campaign. The Ethiopian Diaspora has a responsibility to encourage and support a peaceful competition and outcome of the May 2010 election.
