I’m not sure if your comment was partly a question or just an opinion, but Ethiopia is eligible for AGOA. To be eligible, every African country has to meet certain criteria. I am assuming Ethiopia has met at least the minimal amount of conditions. It is also true that the eligibility could be revoked as Madagascar has two years ago.

Participation in AGOA is a privilege. Eligibility in the program is conditional and could be revoked based on good governance, democratic values, and human rights record. Is Ethiopia even eligible to participate? My answer is no.

Ethiopia is one of the few African countries that hasn’t fully benefited from AGOA. The opportunity for Ethiopia to prosper its economy through trade is passing by very quickly. (AGOA is due to expire in 2015) I hope Ethiopian leaders will use Ms. Clinton’s visit as a wake-up call to develop its export sector. In 2009 Ethiopia exported $18M worth export using AGOA, while next door Kenya exported $395M worth of export.

What is the use of Clinton to visit Ethiopia, unless the Obama administration takes a strict measure to restore the three inseparable objectives that Westerns should stand for are: the establishment of a democratic system, the prevalence of rule of law and due process as well as the protection of human rights. The double standard of western countries are not hidden to those who are informed citizens, however, unfortunately the majorities are gullible who could be mislead by the half-truth of western democracy and free market rhetoric. Apparently, the interest of the western world never changes, but what has been change is our attitude toward them. But this is a critical time that the westerners should take a deep lesson from what happen in North Africa despite the fact that they had a close relationship with the previous dictators.
