The reason Albuquerque is better than California and Florida for long-distance running is because it has one of the highest elevations of any major city in the United States. The altitude of the city ranges from 4,900 feet (1,490 m) above sea level near the Rio Grande (the Nile of North America) to over 6,700 feet (1,950 m) in the foothill areas of Sandia Heights and Glenwood Hills. At the airport, the elevation is 5,352 feet (1,631 m) above sea level.

Of course, I agree with the coach Retta Feyissa that nothing beats Addis Ababa, which sits on a plateau 2400 m (8000 ft.) above sea level. That's why runners who train in Ethiopia will always be on top!

Question: I would have thought California or Florida would be the closest to Ethiopia in terms of weather. It's not 13 months of sunshine, but wouldn't the sunshine state of Florida be better than Albuquerque, New Mexico?
