That’s a profound point for me–no separation between being a writer and being a doctor—same process– need to persevere and keep on revising. Elsewhere, in his book I think, he talks about the doctor’s attention to detail is similar to the writer’s attention to detail.
What impresses me is Abraham Vergheses’s wholeness of vision.

Do you know which area (Sefer) Dr. Abraham Verghese lived growing up in Addis? I had an Indian friend in 5th grade named Abraham and I have no recollection of his last name. But I am almost sure that it was him…we are the same age. I just want to test my memory. The book sounds great. It is getting good feedback and I first read the excerpt when it was published it in the New York Times. I have yet to get the book, but I certainly plan to.

I purchased and read the book after I reading your review couple of months ago. And I must say that although a bit too long, it is a wonderful, wonderful read. Dr. Verghese is not only a highly knowledgeable expert in medicine, but also an incredibly talented writer. What a wonderful introduction of Ethiopia to the rest of the world as well.

Incisive comments on health care – on the policy as well as doctoring. Very eloquent.
Also great message about perseverance – revise and revise and try and try and try again. When you think you have tried enough, try more and then more until you get it – and you will get it. This is the message at the core of every successful person.
