I am not Ethiopian, but I am a student of all eras of music and its development. I love Medieval music from the ancient chant to the Ars Subtilior, and I just wanted to thank Professor Bekerie for this in-depth explanation of Saint Yared and his contribution to the furthering of music notation and creation.

have you noticed guys we Ethiopians failed to promote our geniuses? we had st. yared at early 6th century with all the notes. mozart came at the 18th century and took the whole credit. think of Atse zera’yaeqob. This generation knows hard about him but alot about late European philosophers. Come on guys. wakeup men. lets start aknowledge ours.

I really appreciate your short summary of the biography of St. Yared. Thanks a lot professor for introducing our scholars and their contribution to the rest of the world. We all knew that the western scholars only promote their own while adversely ignoring ours (africa). Dear professor Ayele, I expect continued works from u on the contribution of our great mind scholars since ancient time to recent. You have wider platform.

I haven’t read such a comprehensive literature about the legend St. Yared before, it is one the greatest essence that Yared contributes to the rest the world both musically and culturally. Please keep with your work and explore more about this legendary artist and show the world that Mozart, Beethoven and Joseph Haydn came after him.

That is a good introduction about the life of st.Yared and his works.Yes, he contributed a lot to the development of Ethiopian education and music.But all music now heard and played everywhere in Ethiopia is not derived from his composition.His compositions were totally dedicated to prasing GOD.Some people,who studied his composition in the church and defected later,stared to use a derivative of his sacred rythem for secular occasions.Thus,when we say st.Yared contributed to the development of music in Ethiopia,we need to bear in mind ,though,that he is SAINT and never intended to use his works other than praising GOD the Almighty, nor the derivatives can be used in church as some claim their secular works are yaredic and spiritual.As the writer suggested in his introduction that Tedy Afro adapted st.Yared in his latest songs is absolutely not true! Tedy Afro is a good singer for this generation by keeping the kind of rythem it wants-pop or hip-hop.And that is western.Tedy’s composition is,ofcourse,powerful in speaking the heartbeat of the people,but it does not trace the geneaology of st.Yared.It would have been nice and self reliance for the Ethiopian musical artists to do so.But this does not mean there are not some.Those singers like Shambel Belayineh,yihune Belay,Habtemichael,etc…and artists who play traditional Ethiopian music are the ones who try to trace their Ethiopian origin.

I love what you have put out there on St Yared.”O,Yared,Priest of the alter on high in the heavenly places;Whither the glorious hand of the Father of all has led thee;Yared was born on April25,505A.D.in the city of Aksum.His father was named Adam and his motherTauklia.Yared was blessed with a sweet voice and anyone who heard him sing could not but help being captivated.Now St Yared was not only a composer of hymns but also the originator of a new system of education,revealing his discoveries to the people in Geez which they could easilyunderstanding.Therefore,he is the father of Ethiopian education and has greatly contribute to Ethiopian culture.
