The BBC announced a large and successful turnout with preliminary results reporting a gain of approximately 200 seats for the opposition coalition a signiûcant increase from their previous 12 seats in parliament, and the ruling party claiming 320 seats in the 547-member parliament. Less than a month after the voter turnout, and prior to the release of ûnal counts, the relatively peaceful election process was marred by violence as BBC reported at least 22 civilians were shot dead by police and scores injured on June 8, 2005. The violent crackdown was followed by a city wide taxi strike and closure of business offices as more than 3000 were arrested including students, civilians, and human rights workers. The clashes ignited demonstrations in various cities worldwide with some of the largest rallies held in Washington D.C., San Jose, London, Berlin, and Brussels. On June 9th Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations, called on Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to call off security forces, and BBC s June 14th news report included a statement by U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack urging the government to respect the rule of law, international principles of human rights, and due process with regard to those arrested or detained. An EU-brokered agreement has been signed by both the ruling Ethiopian People s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and the two main opposition coalitions, and both sides have been urged to cooperate as the National Election Board continues to investigate allegations of election fraud.

Soccer at Georgia Dome
This year s Annual North American Ethiopian Soccer Tournament will be held from Sunday, July 3rd to Saturday July 9th.
